Its neither garish nor excessively gilded. There is a tasteful design, which is quite restrained and even understated, as far as Chinese restaurants go. The food is quite good. But, I think I miss the dim sum carts. Im not sure a few dim sum carts with bamboo stacker containers would really have diminished the tasteful design. It is, after all, a dim sum place at lunch. Rather than pushing the carts, the waitresses take orders and bring out the dim sum to your table. The food tastes good. Its efficient service, even though working those carts back into service could be an "atmosphere-enhancing" move.

Ryan's Grill

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sua6G6Axf2I/AAAAAAAAAKE/oQG6xptSrvg/s320/photo-46.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397205831264599906" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sua6GVZ1UtI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/061uMAxgyHs/s320/photo-45.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397205821437596370" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sua6GIY7NHI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/koSJORc0Ln4/s320/photo-44.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397205817944126578" />
And then there was one. Ryan's Grill is, for the time being, the last "man" standing among the upstairs restaurants in the Ward Center (once "the" place for restaurants in Honolulu). With E&O, Compadres and Brew Moon closed, Ryan's has proved that it certainly has staying power... and for good reason. Its been around since the mid-80s. Back then it had a "hip" "new" "current" "now" kind of thing going on. Even now, Ryan's stays current with its food, presentation, colors and flavors. This is part of the reason it has lasted for over a quarter century.

Another great thing about Ryans is its great late night hours, with later night happy hour prices!

Gordon Biersch

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuVaN69djXI/AAAAAAAAAJs/XCzk917Maj8/s320/photo-43.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396818923685252466" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuVaNRiu0RI/AAAAAAAAAJk/pLweFbQBG_w/s320/photo-42.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396818912567283986" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuVaNAlM9YI/AAAAAAAAAJc/JsCvQhupfQ0/s320/photo-41.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396818908014245250" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuVaMy_oISI/AAAAAAAAAJU/_nGLhwhHibg/s320/photo-40.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396818904366981410" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuVaMk7rzzI/AAAAAAAAAJM/u1fhHFQoqVA/s320/photo-39.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396818900592348978" />
A chain restaurant, yes. But still quite an enjoyable evening. There was live music and the food was quite good. Sometimes a trip out to a chain restaurant can be fun too. There is a consistency about these chain restaurants that has its appeal. The portions, as with many of these chains, were large and I took home a doggie black-folding-box. The prices were not the best, but, I think theres a theory to the whole big portions thing, Im just not sure what it is.

We especially enjoyed a dish which they call "tapas" Its a dish with pita breads and four different spreads you can use as toppings. There was an olive spread, a bruschetta, humus, and roasted garlic. I paired it with their seasonal beer, a nice combination.

Chibaken Japanese Restaurant

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuKxxW0alTI/AAAAAAAAAJE/dEOYWsU2XL8/s320/s3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396070765040407858" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuKxxJRv9FI/AAAAAAAAAI8/C3mn1Rtb0mU/s320/s2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396070761405346898" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SuKxw3XjWvI/AAAAAAAAAI0/-1fJGnuR4jQ/s320/s1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396070756597848818" />
If cool little restaurants interest you, check out the segment of Waikiki between Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Moana Blvd, on Ena Road. Its a sweets store, with various snacks, "boba" (pearl tea drinks), ice cream, shaved ice and halo halo, a Filipino dessert consisting of finely shaved ice, shreds of flavored gelatin, fruits and beans. If youre not from the Pacific area, this dessert may sound a bit odd, but, I assure you, its quite refreshing. Hula Boba has wonderful halo halo, the ice is very very fine. The gelatin is tastey and the fruit is plentiful. I recommend it! In other big cities, dinner after 10 pm is not as common as it is here in Honolulu. So, Sorabol Restaurant is a tastey alternative to the Zipps, Mikkey Ds, and J in the Bs. There is sit down service, and pretty decent Korean food. The pic of the cow is an iron hot plate that brings out sizzling kal bi. Unfortunately, the kalbi was pretty tastey, so it was gone before I could take a picture. But the cow shaped hot pan is a point of interest nonetheless. We had a fun dinner at 11 pm, when we were actually ready to eat!

Jack's Restaurant

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SsqUUiSojxI/AAAAAAAAAIE/tHViIn0dVxc/s320/jacks2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389282984625475346" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SsqUUSMRKRI/AAAAAAAAAH8/ILJH6XnWyCc/s320/jacks1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389282980303808786" />
East-Honolulu-ers have a secret: Jack's Restaurant is a fantastic little place for breakfast. Located in Aina Haina Shopping Center, Jack's is a small-ish cafe that is open only for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant is clean, and, the staff is friendly. And... the food is absolutely delicious!

We each had an omelette and split a short stack of buttermilk pancakes. Without exaggerating, these pancakes (which came suprisingly fast, despite the cafe being packed) were among the best I've ever had! The omelettes were delicious and the portions were big, without being ridiculous!

On that Saturday morning, we walked right in and there was a table. But we had been lucky! The people after us were not so lucky with seating... By the time we were done savoring every last bite of those buttermilk pancakes, there were at least 15 people waiting outside Jack's doors.

After eating at this little East Honolulu secret, I really do understand its reputation as a top notch breakfast place. I could also understand the dozen, or more, people waiting outside with nothing but anticipation on their minds!

Shabu Shabu

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sspk2rHciLI/AAAAAAAAAH0/SGphwhC8TM8/s320/shabu+shabu+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389230794551888050" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SspkpQB14CI/AAAAAAAAAHs/rfpVNmPQ37I/s320/shabu+shabu+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389230563942326306" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SspkowmxFbI/AAAAAAAAAHk/CTYVo9i-FkA/s320/shabu+shabu+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389230555507266994" />
While "shabu shabu" is technically a Japanese tradition, many Chinese people enjoy it as well. Really, its a variant of the Chinese hot pot cooking tradtion. In the case of Shabu Shabu Restaurant, the hot put cooking is aided by a high tech induction heater at each table.

The pot is full of liquid, and, you place whatever you've ordered into it to cook. We had a few types of thinly sliced beef, and some seafood. In this way, shabu shabu is similar to Japanese sukiyaki, but, the flavors are quite different. Whereas sukiyaki has sweeter flavors, shabu shabu is more savory.

The sauces provided at Shabu Shabu Restaurant were delicious. The waitress, a friendly young woman with a Chinese accent, recommended that we mix a few of the sauces, which we did. Delightful!

All in all, we enjoyed ourselves---cooking at the table, talking and laughing. Theres more interaction, I think, at a cook-your-own dinner. Oh, and the giant Japanese imported beers helped too.

Mexico Restaurant

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Ssmwc7W9TeI/AAAAAAAAAHc/OZhZFiPD6II/s320/photo-29.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389032440142319074" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SsmwWB1MMeI/AAAAAAAAAHU/FNC7JdkSaSo/s320/photo-28.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389032321620652514" />
Clearly not Filipino, Hawaiian, Plate Lunch or Chinese, this restaurant's name is almost needed to state its identity. This is where chefs from different venues come to the cafe and get to have fun. They really express themselves in a five course set menu, something they may not really be able to do at their regular gigs.

Cafe Hula Girl's "Guest Chef" events are the most interesting and most innovative dining experiences of this year! I attended a previous one, the "encore" of chef Merle Mariano, who was formerlly at the Wynn Las Vegas. I blogged (raved, really) about it previously.

As Im learning, the proprietors of Cafe Hula Girl have the wit and imagination that really makes you certain that there was some "purpose" in the naming of the last event. For those fortunate enough to have enjoyed the Wynn Las Vegas, you may know that they expanded the resort to include a second hotel tower, another casino, and more ammenities. They named their expansion the "Encore". Similarly, Cafe Hula Girl's repeat of Chef Mariano was named his "encore."

On to Chef Sato's dinner... I simply do not have the leeway, nor the energy, to artfully, or witfully, dance around my review of this Chef's dinner. It's just impossible for me not to rave about Chef Sato's fabulous dinner!

Highlights: The french onion soup, (called something else that night), did not have a toasty, cheesey crust. Instead, it was accompanied by a puff pastry "gift" (see my amateurish attempt to photograph it). A hearty delight! There was also a "deconstructed" gazpacho, with all the flavors of this summertime soup, but none of the soup! The pork loin had flavor, literally, gushing from the meat! The presentation was nothing short of spectacular! Fit for any Ramsay, Morimoto or Flay!

Lets not forget the ambiance! The service was very friendly and efficient, and, there even seemed to be time for the staff to chat with the tables, making people feel comfortable and welcome! The entertainment was,again, by Paul Barton. One of the waiters confided in me that the originally booked entertainer was forced to cancel, due to an emergency. But, the result was another fabulous performance. Paul's non-vocal guitar stylings are the perfect accompanyment to these creative and delicious dinners. The music is, at once, passionate, energetic and entertaining--without taking away one bit from the food. On the contrary, the two best accompanyments for Chef Sato's dinner was a wonderful glass of red wine and Paul Barton's guitar!

Rosarino Pizza

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SrZ1CSzvgDI/AAAAAAAAAG0/hYpCcBM-KSQ/s320/photo-26.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383619086837055538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SrZ1Bx1EphI/AAAAAAAAAGs/PRJ08WSQS8c/s320/photo-27.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383619077984265746" />
Although Rosarino Pizza is the lone Italian restaurant amidst numerous windows with hanging roast duck, odd smelling asian produce, and chinese imports, it does not particularly stand out. You'd think an Italian restaurant in China Town would stick out like a sore thumb, (with marinara sauce). True, it is odd, but once your eyes re-focus and you realize what it is, but, you could just as easily walked by. The interior is equally non-descript. Nonetheless, Rosarina Pizza has a reputation that reaches all shores of Oahu. Friends from "the country" have made special note to bring back Rosarina to their eagerly waiting friends and family, "way out there".

I finally tried Rosarina Pizza recently and wasn't at all disappointed. I've worked down town for years, too many years, and have known about this place for quite some time. So, of course, I had to try the infamous pizza: delicious! We split the pizza because I was compelled to also try the spaghetti with meatballs, my favorite food on earth. If you can impress me with your spaghetti, well.... Simply put, I was impressed. Tasted a lot like my Italian Nana made for me as a child. (o.k., Nana really wasn't italian, but, her spaghetti was as fabulous as any I've had anywhere, ahhh Nana...)

Cafe Hula Girl's "Guest Chef" Event

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3L6QPCHZI/AAAAAAAAAGk/04Zt2vOwTZY/s320/photo-25.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381181331428482450" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3L6OwYcmI/AAAAAAAAAGc/AP2tBoyLwf8/s320/photo-23.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381181331031487074" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3L5_IbiYI/AAAAAAAAAGU/euyd0tQufoE/s320/photo-22.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381181326837385602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3L5dtMV3I/AAAAAAAAAGM/s-mkMVPBRw4/s320/photo-21.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381181317864773490" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3L5BPUJGI/AAAAAAAAAGE/9CLJ0sqlJ-4/s320/photo-20.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381181310223262818" /> Cafe Hula Girl's Guest Chef Events are five-course set menus prepared by chefs from various other venues, including mainland venues, personal chefs and other Hawaii restaurants. We were at Chef Merle Marian's Guest Chef Event. He is from the Wynn Las Vegas, and, it shows. The presentation was spot-on and multi-dimensional (if you'll allow me a little use of my vocabulary). The Deep Blue Sea Menu included Crab Cakes, Scallops and Birds Nest Soup, Rock Shrimp Pot Stickers and Pan Seared Opakapaka. Oh, and the Opakapaka came out riding a blue wave made from fried sweet potato, very cool. The entertainment was by Paul Barton, who played beautiful guitar as a backdrop to this divine dinner. If you have the chance to try a Guest Chef Event, take my advice and do it!

OTTO Cakes

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3IGIhcBuI/AAAAAAAAAF8/kNMfIZ463Ko/s320/photo-19.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381177137470113506" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3IFqXH5YI/AAAAAAAAAF0/PcWgp9GpY48/s320/photo-18.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381177129373787522" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq3IFE9t6JI/AAAAAAAAAFs/Rp9E1fhEijQ/s320/photo-17.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381177119335114898" /> In other cities on the mainland and abroad, small, "alternative," "bohemian" type businesses like OTTO Cakes thrive. They offer people other choices in products, services, etc. These types of businesses can really have something special and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the small business climate in Hawaii has not been very favorable to these smaller alternatives. Im very glad to see OTTO Cakes exist and thrive! That alone was reason enough to visit. I did it and really enjoyed it. When these boys tweet about having awesome cakes, they are correct! Its all about "atmosphere," with live music playing in the bar and the smell of grilling foods wafting out of the open kitchen. On a busy Friday night, expect to wait a little for your food, but, it is tastey. All in all, an enjoyable but not especially memorable evening. But then, perhaps that was not really the goal. Sometimes an enjoyable dinner is something good in itself.

M P Lei Shop in China Town

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq2uPIydkNI/AAAAAAAAAFM/0s0W_zWuhoM/s320/photo-13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381148704858018002" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/Sq2uOs22LjI/AAAAAAAAAFE/ve_ttf5TgoA/s320/photo-12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381148697360215602" /> Four Dollars for an orchid lei, now thats a deal. So, instead of just passing by Tiki's Cafe-as I usually do, on my way to the busy lunch places on Fort Street, I stopped in. Like so many other people, it seems that no one wants to be the first to try some place. Or, no one wants to give a chance to a place that looks empty. I walked in to see a poorly decorated hodge-podge of a place, with tables and chairs that looked like they were bought at garage sales, elementary schools, etc. When I got to the counter I was greeted by an eager, friendly man who explained that the $6 lunch special included salad and a drink! So I ordered my lunch and sat down. It was actually pretty tastey. And as I sat there, more people filed in, filing up the dining room. I'll definitely be back!

Govindaji-Vegetarian Cuisine

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqmCfAanAcI/AAAAAAAAADk/QtHQuD6jrcA/s320/govindaji.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379974699069931970" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqmCet-9oxI/AAAAAAAAADc/OqYaw97y9zM/s320/govindaji2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379974694122136338" />
Govindaji, from what I've read, translates to "the Protector of Cows." Its an appropriate name for a vegetarian cafe, where no cow meat is served. The very interesting menu usually has 2 or 3 entrees, which is served with a nice salad and organic-ish looking rice. Todays rice was an interestingly brownish-red, with varying shades of the colors, and a nice nutty flavor/texture. My entree was a sort of pumpkin curry, which was spiced mildly and almost reminded me of christmas. (Im sure it was not intended to do that--after all it is a hindu cafe). The interior was quite simply done, and did not vary much from the rest of Fort Street. However, there were beautiful touches, including silk table clothes (under the plexiglass tops) and a gorgeous, hand-painted wall that depicted scenes of India. The staff was pleasant. While they looked like your typical white skater-types, their peaceful demeanor made them quite believable as hindu vegetarians.

1132 Cafe & Espresso Bar

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqlkPJ9te_I/AAAAAAAAADU/FURsAWo0Bgs/s320/1132b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379941441406335986" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqlkO1IdVII/AAAAAAAAADM/4j2txft1tKw/s320/1132a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379941435814270082" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqlkN9SewfI/AAAAAAAAADE/hvGTDN2BckU/s320/1132+cafe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379941420823921138" />
Deep inside the base of a red granite obelisk, the 1132 Cafe & Expresso Bar is brief notch within the giant polished slabs of stone. I did not. (Smoking is prohibited indoors). There were the usual small bowls with side dishes like kimchee, sprouts, etc. But, then there were also unusual side dishes, like raw crab, steamed tofu and octopuss with hot sauce. Multiple little side dishes always catch my attention... if only they were in nicer bowls... We ordered kalbi, which really was quite good. It was juicy without being too greasy, and, very flavorful. The aproned korean lady served us and was really friendly. All in all, an enjoyable lunch! Try Vita Juice, and, my personal favorite, an acai smoothie!

R&B's aka Sand Island Sports Bar

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqDurHeOxEI/AAAAAAAAACM/t6O0XneSw5U/s320/photo-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377560379588002882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqDukO6q_xI/AAAAAAAAACE/AMr1k079agg/s320/photo-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377560261327257362" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqDuKK3H_aI/AAAAAAAAAB8/dPy5U-7-Ucg/s320/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377559813562039714" />
We went to R&B's which is also known as Sand Island Sports Bar. Its an out of the way club with a mildly dated decor, kinda Fresh Prince meets the 90s. They have live music on Thurs, Fris and Sundays. Tonite they had a band called "Gravy All Over" a cool band of youngish local boys, kinda Jawaiian, Reggae, local, it was fun! The cover was only $3 which was a bargain for the entertainment and the service was friendly. Friendly service is so important these days! Its an unexpectedly fun time in the heart of Sand Island! I like finding unexpected gems.

JJ Dolans Down Town Pub

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqBUAs5ZRWI/AAAAAAAAAB0/m9PyUuPSUBI/s320/jjdolans3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377390326108996962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqBT72by2bI/AAAAAAAAABs/VoJzhATV1yQ/s320/jjdolans2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377390242769852850" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gHzkKdyr4jM/SqBT3ClaSEI/AAAAAAAAABk/X-1GHQ_Xbss/s320/jjdolans.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377390160132065346" />
Today we had lunch at JJ Dolans Pub in down town Honolulu. We had a business meeting, which was very convenient, as the restaurant is in the heart of down town Honolulu. Its in the basement of the Executive Center. The decor was nicely done, but not off the deep end of Tiki Tiki Time. I havent decided if they may not have gone far enough in that direction or not. But, suffice to say that the decor was pleasant. Lunch prices were just slightly on the higher end, but then, for sit down service for a business lunch, it was quite par. The signs posted some very attractive happy hour prices, pitchers, taco tuesdays, etc. We may have to come check it out again! The service was very friendly, we had a polite and cheerful waitress. The food was good, my guest had some steamed Opah which looked and smelled delicious. She didnt even have to add shoyu, which is high praise from her--indeed! I had a grilled chicken sandwhich, which was good, I loved the toasted bun--a nice touch. All in all, it was a pleasant lunch and we will be back to try it again!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whatdoinghnl.blogspot.com/2009/09/hukilau-sports-bar-grill.html' title='Hukilau Sports Bar & There was great food: Stew Plate; Huli Huli Chicken, Stamina Ramen, Fried Noodles, Shaved Ice, BBQ Beef, Bubble Tea... a true local foodie's dream! There was also mochi-poi pounding, live entertainment by several great groups, including "Local Uprising". White Elephant, Church-Lady-Type handi-crafts and much more.

There were even appearances by local luminaries, including the Yee-Haw Lady (of Costco fame) and the Doggie who wears Glasses (famous in Waikiki & Island-wide). Tenrikyo Bazaar makes you wanna say, "Yeeeeeeee-HAW!"

It was a great success, and showed the true sincerity of dozens of church members in their hard work, friendship and fun--what Tenrikyo refer to as "hinokishin," a labor of love that Tenrikyo strive to do. These labors of love, show brother/sisterhood among us by helping each other. Its a small way to say thanks to God, the parent.

What is Tenrikyo? Quite briefly, its a monotheistic religion that believes that God is our Parent, and that we are brothers and sisters put on Earth to live the Joyous Life. The Joyous Life is like a Heaven on Earth, all humans, together, living in peace and harmony. Its a very simple description. If you're interested, hit me up and I'll explain a little more!
